People in the advertising industry in the Tri-State area know Paul Brokaw and Joe Refano as writers, producers and performers of “award-winning’ Radio & TV Commercials, Jingles, Music and Sound Design working out of their Centerport, New York studios (Huntington, Long Island NY). Their company (originally Sound Mechanix) created some of the most memorable Radio campaigns over a 20 year period.

They’ve won many Best on Long Island awards; the BPMA’s prestigious international Gold Medallion for excellence; a Telly, a Silver Microphone and have had several Emmy nominations in their list of credits.  Says Refano, “In the final analysis the best award we can win is the positive results we provide to our clients.  That simply put, is what this is all about”.

Over the years they have worked with everyone from the New York Yankees to Panasonic Office Products…from WLNY-TV to AT&T…from The Pinebarrens Society to the Long Island Power Authority…PC Richard & Son…from Kozy Shack Puddings to Steiner Sports…The Suffolk County Police…the Medical Society of the State of New York…Hofstra University…Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter…the New York Islanders…NEWSDAY…and a host of local and regional ad agencies and companies from car dealerships to restaurants…colleges to home remodelers…fuel oil companies and software providers. An eclectic collection of clients and projects to be sure.

In 2005 they changed the name of the company to MEDIA MECHANIX to reflect their expansion into the Video and TV realm.  Brokaw says, “We had always dabbled on the video side of things but we never made the full commitment to it like we did then. It’s a visual world out there…the possibilities are virtually endless”. MEDIA MECHANIX shot and produced many video projects in the New York Tri-state area and up and down the East Coast.

Their workload would certainly keep most producers quite busy, but Messrs. Brokaw and Refano are also musicians and composers having written and produced hundreds of ad jingles, songs and instrumental tracks that have appeared in a diverse collection of media, TV shows, music libraries and movies.

You’ve heard their music and songs in these programs and in media productions around the world.

They have also composed and produced over 400 instrumental music tracks for Sonoton Music, the world’s oldest and largest independent music library located in Munich, as well as music for other music companies world-wide.  As members of ASCAP, they are approaching 600 published works.

MEDIA MECHANIX also provides SOUND DESIGN services. They have Audio Post Produced and/or Mixed over 100 long form Broadcast Television Programs, mainly in the Sports and Documentary areas.

We’re lucky. We enjoy a great deal of freedom. We get to work in many different areas” says Brokaw. “It’s definitely a unique situation. We get to flex our creative muscles on a regular basis.

I wouldn’t trade it for anything…well maybe I’d trade some of it for a chance to jam with Paul McCartney
